students can express their ideas with creativity, clarity, and exactness in a variety of
problem-solving experiences. Through the course of study, students will design items with
creative purpose, communicate their ideas orally, visually and in written form, and
fabricate models, prototypes and actual products. Helpful as a complement to all Art and
Technology electives, and as pre-vocational and college preparation. Successful completion
satisfies the high school Art/Music requirement.
Prerequisite: none (Technical Drawing helpful)
Full Year: l credit
ELECTRICITY/ELECTRONICS
A foundation course offering theory and application in both low and high voltage
circuitry. Instruction and problem-solving activities include the construction and/or
fabrication of several functioning products and systems. The focus of the course is on the
comprehensive representation of electrical and electronic technologies in the home,
commercial and industrial environment. Helpful for pre-vocational training, college
preparation, and as a complement to Physics & Chemistry.
Prerequisites: none
Half Year: 1/2 credit
Offered alternate years (00/01, 02/03...)
INTRODUCTION TO OCCUPATIONS
This course is intended to help students prepare for working and surviving in the economic
world today. There are two major purposes to this course. One is to develop transferable
skills which can be used in later work or home responsibilities (applying and interviewing
for a job, or maintaining a budget for the home). The other is to explore occupational
interests and abilities prior to taking more specialized occupational courses. This course
is required of all Occupational (Technology) Education majors, and a State Proficiency
Exam is required.
Half Year: 1/2 credit
PRODUCTION SYSTEMS
Activities and instruction center on the construction and manufacturing technologies,
their resources, processes, products, and impact on society. Emphasis is placed on
quality, the relationship of economy and environment, and manufacturing considerations.
Several products are planned and constructed throughout the course of instruction. (State
Final)
Prerequisite: none (Technical Drawing/DDP helpful)
Half Year: 1/2 credit
Offered alternate years (99/00, 01/02...)
RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURES
A practical approach to the design and construction of residential dwellings and
structures. Coursework includes fundamental blueprint reading, construction considerations
in electrical, plumbing and masonry applications. Students will become proficient in
various techniques as they construct actual and model structures. Helpful for practical
home consideration, for all Technology courses and as college preparation and
pre-vocational training.
Prerequisites: none (Production Systems/DDP helpful)
Half Year: 1/2 credit
Offered alternate years 00/01, 02/03...)
COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
Instruction and activities include the application of a CAD system to design and draw. The
course explores the various uses, advantages and impacts of computer design systems on
technical endeavors including engineering fields, architectural and commercial
applications. Useful as a compliment to all technology and art instruction and for
vocational and pre-college preparation.
Prerequisite: Technical Drawing or Permission of the Instructor
Half Year: 1/2 credit
PHOTOGRAPHY
An exploration of the technical and aesthetic aspects of silver-halide photography (black
and white). Instruction, activities and experiences include basic and applied skills in
camera, film and printing manipulation. Career and hobby skills are sharpened throughout
the course of instruction. Critiquing, artistic and technical abilities are developed in a
challenging and enjoyable environment. Useful as a compliment to all technology and art
instruction and for vocational and pre-college preparation.
Prerequisite: none
Half Year: 1/2 credit
MATERIAL PROCESSING
A further application of design, construction and cost implications related to the use of
an array of materials in technical fields. A project oriented approach requires research,
process refinement and skill development while advocating problem-oriented solutions.
Useful as a compliment to all technology and art instruction and for vocational and
pre-college preparation.
Prerequisite: Production Systems, grades 10-12
Half Year: 1/2 credit
Offered alternate years (99/00, 01/02...)
COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS
This course of study offers an introduction to popular forms of communication
such as radio and television production (audio and video), screen printing, desktop
publishing, and Computer-Aided Drawing. Students will enjoy the hands-on approach.
(State final)
Prerequisite: none
Half year: 1/2 credit
