10 Steps in the RESEARCH Process

Once you have identified the main topic for your research: 

  1. State your topic as a question. Identify KEYWORDS in your question. 

  2. Use encyclopedias and dictionaries to find background information on your topic
    and to identify KEYWORDS.

  3. Use iBistro to locate printed materials in the general and reference collection.

  4. Identify KEYWORDS in subject headings.

  5. Use the TST BOCES SLS Union Catalog to locate printed materials in
    neighboring schools that may be borrowed through interlibrary loan. Identify KEYWORDS in subject headings.

  6. Use Indexes of Periodicals (Infotrac, Reader's Guide) to find current information
    about your topic. Use available electronic databases to find information on your topic.

  7. Use the WEB to find INTERNET resources about your topic. Use the KEYWORDS you have gathered to search. 

  8. Evaluate the sources you have found. Look at author, publisher, edition, and date of publication.

  9. Use the MLA to cite what you have found. Record what you found and where you found it.

  10. Write your research paper.
