Welcome to the the science department home page. We have developed this site with the purpose of providing students and parents with information about our science program in the middle school as well as providing links to useful resources. Be sure to check out the link to your specific grade level for more specifics.

Our Philosphy:
The science department at Russell I. Doig Middle School wishes to set forth the following goals for each and every student that walks through our doors during the 5 th to 8 th grade years.  First off, we want science to be fun.  Science to us is the study of every day phenomena.  By awaking our curiosity to these events, we wish to set the stage for good discussion and many questions.  In this type of learning environment, we wish to properly outfit our students with the tools they need to arrive at possible solutions to their questions.  The tools we emphasize are found in the Scientific Method.  This is a method of problem solving that is supported throughout the grades by utilizing a specific lab format.  Basically, by adhering to this format of question answering and problem solving, we hope to instill in our students the language and methodology that is used by scientists all over the world to answer both very complicated and very simple questions of inquiry.

Even if our students don't become scientists in the paid sense, everyone who tries to solve a problem in whatever walk of life can utilize the Scientific Method.  Therefore, through the exploration of science concepts utilizing the Scientific Method, it is also our goal to help grow students that can take risks, think critically, voice their opinion with strong “because” statements, and apply their science understandings to new situations in life.

The means by which we make science instruction “stick to your ribs” is by making every effort to show the relevance of our science topics through the use of hands-on experiments, demonstrations, outside presenters, lively discussion, and multi-media resources.  By making the commitment to making science relevant and fun, it is our goal to make as many of these science topics take root in the student's memory bank so that they can succeed, and beyond that, so that they can have a love for what is taking place around them in the natural mystery and phenomena found on this little blue planet and beyond.
